Alki is the first location that Euro-American settlers in the Denny Party landed when they came to the Seattle area in 1851. The settlers named their new home New York-Alki. The translation of Alki is "by and by" or "in a while" in Chinook. They worked to try and establish a town in the area but the point has harsher wind and wave conditions than areas inside Elliott Bay to the east. Many of the Denny Party left Alki in the first year and moved to locations in what is not downtown Seattle. Only one of the original settlers stayed on Alki and he struggled to get the town to grow as its exposed location made for limited industrial and commercial potential and the land was also not suitable for farming. Until the mid 1900’s growth and development continued quite slowly in comparison to the surrounding parts of both West Seattle and Seattle proper. After the current West Seattle Bridge was built in the 1980’s Alki started to experience another period of growth.

Today Alki is a unique neighborhood in Seattle in that its location and vibe are unlike any other with a beachy resort feel and a sandy beach and long walkway along the shores for people to enjoy. Alki is one of the few locations in Seattle where visitors and residents feel like they are not in Seattle or even Washington state. There are a number of businesses, shops and restaurants which line Alki Avenue and on warm summer days people flock to the area to enjoy the unique vibe that it offers. Housing in Alki is a mixture of older single family homes built in the early 1900’s and predominately newer condos which line Alki Avenue and a scattering of townhouses. The properties along or close to the water enjoy spectacular views of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. Condos in Alki start at prices around $700k with those that are larger penthouse styled exceeding $1m. Townhouses and single family homes start around $1m although larger homes with views quickly go above $1.5m.
