The Ravenna neighborhood is one of Seattle’s older neighborhoods and like many others north of Seattle it grew into existence as rail lines of the Seattle, Lake Shore & Eastern Railroad extended up the western shores of Lake Washington. The stands of douglas fir that covered the Ravenna area were bisected by the creek which drained Green Lake into Union Bay. As the late 1800’s came, the area was bought by developers who began platting the area into lots. The Beck family purchased 400 acres in the area in 1889 and created Ravenna Park, a wooded ravine with old growth timber where Ravenna Creek flowed. By 1895 the University of Washington relocated from downtown Seattle to its present day location on Union Bay south of Ravenna. Ravenna was annexed by the city of Seattle in 1907 and experienced a strong period of growth afterwards particularly as faculty of the nearby university moved into the area. By the time Interstate 5 was built in 1960 and re-defined the neighborhood borders Ravenna had become one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Seattle.

Modern day Ravenna is known for its laid back residential vibe and tree lined streets of early 1900’s homes. There is no business district inside the neighborhood although NE 65th Street and the border with Roosevelt offers a great mixture of shops, restaurants and pubs. Additionally the University Village is just southeast of the neighborhood and is one of the larger, upscale open-air shopping malls in all of Seattle with a mix of national retailers, small local shops and restaurants. Housing in Ravenna is primarily single-family although there are very limited number of condos as well. The single-family homes are primarily modestly sized and built in the early 1900’s many of which have a craftsman look and feel. Price points for homes in Ravenna start around $500k and quickly go up from there with larger or remodeled homes approaching the $1m range.
