The Northgate neighborhood is named after the Northgate Mall in north Seattle which opened in 1950 and was considered to be one of the first suburban shopping "malls" in the United States. The area on which the mall was built was a marshy, boggy part of Thornton Creek that had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. As Seattle expanded northward in the early and mid 1900's developers, architects and the president of Bon Marche recognized the opportunity for a new kind of suburban shopping center with open walkways where no vehicles were permitted. The Northgate Mall was built and as it drew in patrons from the entire Seattle metro area it also attracted them to live nearby in the areas that were still being transitioned from farmland to residential development.

Modern day Northgate has Interstate 5 running through the middle of it just to the west of the mall itself and has continued to grow and expand over the years. There is of course the mall itself along with a large number of businesses nearby it on the streets which service the mall. Residents in Northgate enjoy easy access to I-5 and downtown Seattle along with the businesses nearby. Northgate has a more urban feel to it than other communities nearby and has a higher percentage of condos that most neighborhoods north of downtown Seattle occupying nearly half of the housing in the area. Prices for condos in Northgate start as lows as $150k for smaller 1 bedrooms and can get into the upper $200's for larger and newer units. Townhouses in Northgate start around $300k and single family homes around $350k with price points topping out around $600k making Northgate one of the more affordable areas in North Seattle.
