Laurelhurst is a neighborhood the shores of Lake Washington occupying a peninsula which sticks out into Union Bay. Laurelhurst is one of the older neighborhoods in Seattle despite its location well north of downtown. The first settlers in the area after the Native Americans came as early as the 1860’s as people recognized the ease of which you could cross the waters of Union Bay to Madison Park. During the late 1800’s the area grew slowly despite the addition of a rail line of the Seattle Lake Shore Railroad through the area. In the late 1800’s Henry Yesler had built a sawmill in the area and as the trees came down development of the cleared land began in earnest in the early 1900’s and the area was given its name.
Laurelhurst was annexed to Seattle in 1910 and after the Montlake Cut was completed in 1917, additional shoreline opened up as the lake level dropped. Laurelhurst has a less urban feel than other neighborhoods in Seattle with winding, tree lined streets and views of the lake and is one of the reasons for its popularity and desirability back then as well as now. There is no business district inside Laurelhurst although there are on Sand Point Way and the University Village is close by. The majority of homes in Laurelhurst are single family were built in the early to mid 1900’s and there is only a small number of condos on the northwestern edge of the neighborhood. Single family homes in Laurelhurst start around $1m and quickly go up in price to the multi-millions if view or waterfront is part of the property.
