The Green Lake neighborhood is named after the small lake which bears its namesake and is one of the more well known areas in all of Seattle.   When the Seattle area was being explored and surveyed in 1855, the survey team found a lake north of Lake Union that was bright green with algae growth and the name stuck.   Homesteads were claimed around Green Lake in the 1860’s and 70’s but significant growth of the community didn’t happen until Seattle’s overall large expansion in the late 1880’s as trolley and train lines made north/south travel much easier.  By the early 1900’s Green Lake had become one of the more prominent suburbs of downtown Seattle and those living in the city flocked to the lake in the summer to enjoy recreating there and bought up the little remaining undeveloped land.   Throughout the 1900’s Green Lake was a popular destination for swimmers, rowers and later motor boats.  

Modern day Green Lake is still used for the same things but motor boats are no longer allowed.  There is now a trail around the entire lake that’s used for walking and jogging, parks, picnic areas and playfields at the northern and southern ends.   Green Lake has a vibrant business district at the northern and north eastern ends of the lake with a large number of shops, restaurants, coffee bars, brewpubs and several markets.  Housing in Green Lake is a mixture of single family, condos and townhouses and there has been a good amount of new construction in the area over recent years.  Due to its popularity and desirability the housing in Green Lake commands a premium price point with condos starting around $450k, townhouses at $600k and single family homes around $800k although those home in close proximity to the lake will start over $1m.
