The neighborhood of Rainier Valley is known by its location along Rainier Avenue as it heads south from Interstate 90. It's called Rainier Valley because of its location in a depression between Beacon Hill to the west and the Mt. Baker and Seward Park area to the east. The southern end of Rainier Valley is considered to be Rainier Beach. Rainier Valley grew in the early 1900's in conjunction with the trolley line which ran down Rainier Avenue from downtown Seattle to Renton. Rainer Valley had significant development and growth in the early 1900's and remained largely unchanged until World War II. At that time major temporary housing projects were built for war time workers and the neighborhood was flooded with new occupants.
After the war years the area became its move towards one of the most diverse in all of Seattle. African Americans, under pressure from discriminative housing ordinances in other parts of Seattle moved to Rainier Valley with many other ethnic groups following in the 1970's. Rainier Valley went through a difficult period with safety and crime that came to be associated with a couple housing projects in the area that were remodeled in the late 90's and early 2000's. Today, Rainier Valley has become an attractive area for residents due to its diversity, transportation options, parks and moderate housing prices. The majority of housing in Rainier Valley is single family and multi-family with price points starting in the upper $200k range.
