Northwest of downtown Seattle, Ballard started its life as a community in the mid 1800's and by the late 1800's it had become a city of its own incorporating in 1890. In 1907 Ballard agreed to be annexed to the city of Seattle and became one of the larger and more inhabited neighborhoods of the growing city. Ballard continued its growth after the Hiram Chittenden (Ballard) Locks were built connecting Puget Sound with Lake Union. Because of its proximity to the sound, Ballard continued its growth in the 1900's around the logging, shipping and fishing industries. A sizable number of immigrants who settled in Ballard came from Scandinavian countries and the neighborhood continues to have a noticeable presence there to this day. Market Street and the nearby blocks of Ballard Avenue now have some of the hippest restaurants, shops and night life in all of Seattle and Ballard has become one of the most desirable neighborhoods.

In the early 2000's that began to change as Seattle residents recognized the opportunity in Ballard to find reasonable priced housing a short commute to downtown in a neighborhood that had a unique feel and vibe to it.
