FREMONT | North Seattle Neighborhoods
The Fremont neighborhood is one of the most well known and intriguing neighborhoods in all of Seattle. On the shores of the Lake Washington Ship Canal’s Fremont Cut, Fremont is one of the older neighborhoods in Seattle as it drew settlers in the late 1800’s due to quick rail access to downtown Seattle. Fremont continued a period of growth until that trolley and rail service stopped in the 1940’s. Throughout the mid to late 1900’s Fremont became a popular enclave for artists, students, counter culture types and bohemians as it had low rents and properties which suffered from a bit of neglect. That same atmosphere still exists in Fremont today as its residents often refer to it as “the center of the universe.”
During the last twenty years Fremont has experienced a boom as a number of large companies have built offices and headquarters in the Fremont area. Fremont has a bustling business district at its core with a large number of coffee bars, restaurants, shops and nightlife. The companies with offices in Fremont coupled with everything Fremont has to offer has made it a very popular and sought after neighborhood lately driving up home values. Housing in Fremont is a mixture of condos, townhouses and single family residences with the single family harder to find than the multi-family. Most of the single family homes in Fremont were built in the early 1900’s while the condos and townhouse are typically much newer with some recent construction. Condos in Fremont start around $300k, townhouses around $600k and single family homes around $800k although prices quickly go up from there depending upon age, size and desirability.
